Olympian Letsile Tebogo Launches Foundation to Honor Mother’s Memory
Track star Letsile Tebogo has channeled personal grief into a powerful initiative, launching the Letsile Tebogo Charitable Foundation. The foundation is a tribute to his late mother, Seratiwa Tebogo, who passed away from cancer two years ago. This move follows public discussion surrounding Tebogo’s ‘F*ck Cancer’ tattoo, which he has now revealed holds deep personal significance.
A Mother’s Battle and a Son’s Vow
The foundation’s launch event in Gaborone featured a heartfelt speech, read by Tebogo’s sister, Ano Tebogo, detailing their family’s nine-year journey through their mother’s illness. The family witnessed her struggle, describing cancer’s impact not only on their mother’s body but also on their family dynamics and aspirations.
Tebogo’s sister conveyed the profound pain of watching their mother suffer while feeling helpless. She spoke of their mother’s resilience, even comforting her children while battling her own pain. The loss of their mother in May 2022 left an immense void. Tebogo reflected on the enduring nature of grief, stating that one learns to carry it rather than seeing it disappear.
From this profound experience, Tebogo committed to ensuring his mother’s fight was not in vain. He vowed to support others facing similar challenges, aiming to prevent families from navigating this difficult journey alone.
Foundation’s Mission and Future Plans
The Letsile Tebogo Charitable Foundation aims to provide comprehensive support for those affected by cancer. Its services will include psychosocial counseling, emotional support, and awareness campaigns. The foundation will also focus on early detection initiatives, survivor support groups, and empowerment programs. Additionally, it plans to develop skills, implement healthcare support projects, and forge strategic partnerships to enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors and their families.
The foundation’s inaugural initiative will be the Botswana Cancer Survivorship Summit, scheduled for November 2026. This summit will unite healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, cancer survivors, and the public to foster knowledge sharing and develop practical solutions.
Community Support and Call to Action
The launch garnered significant support, with attendees including Botswana’s First Lady Kaone Boko, Chairman of Ntlo ya Dikgosi, Kgosi Malope II, government officials, corporate partners, and cancer survivors. Kgosi Malope II emphasized the event’s significance beyond a new organization, declaring it a commitment to confronting cancer, a disease that affects everyone.
Orange Botswana demonstrated its commitment by pledging P250,000 towards the foundation, highlighting growing support for the initiative’s vital mission.
