Botswana slides further in global competitiveness as African peers pull ahead

Botswana’s Economic Headwinds: A Deep Dive into Declining Competitiveness

Botswana is facing mounting pressure regarding its economic competitiveness. Recent data indicates a continued downward trend, raising concerns about the nation’s attractiveness to investors and its long-term growth prospects.

Slipping in Global Rankings

The latest IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2026 places Botswana at 66th out of 70 economies analyzed. This marks the country’s lowest position in five years, following a steady decline from 58th place in 2022. Globally, Botswana now ranks above only Mongolia, Nigeria, Namibia, and Venezuela.

Underlying Economic Challenges

Several factors contribute to Botswana’s weakening position. The economy continues to grapple with slow growth and persistent unemployment. Furthermore, a significant reliance on the diamond industry highlights a lack of economic diversification, which many observers believe hinders broader development and resilience.
