Botswana’s Ever Growing Athletics Doping Violations

Botswana Athletics Grapples with Doping Violations

Botswana’s athletics community faces growing concerns as multiple athletes receive provisional suspensions due to alleged doping infractions. This trend highlights a challenging period for the nation’s sporting integrity.

Recent Suspension Adds to Concerns

On May 26, 2026, the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) announced the provisional suspension of 800m runner Letlhogonolo Mokgethi. Authorities allege a positive test result for 19-norandrosterone, a prohibited substance, during in-competition testing on April 4, 2026. This development marks another instance in a series of similar cases within the country’s athletics scene.

Ongoing Doping Cases

Mokgethi’s suspension follows an ongoing situation involving four other prominent track athletes. Lydia Jele, Refilwe Murangi, Zibane Ngozi, and Karabo Mothibi are currently part of a court process related to doping allegations. These parallel instances suggest a broader issue impacting Botswana’s athletic reputation.
