Botswana loses ground in Africa’s industrialisation race

Botswana’s Industrial Ambition Faces Headwinds

Botswana’s industrialization efforts have seen a notable setback, with the nation’s standing in African rankings declining over more than a decade. A recent report highlights a six-place drop in its industrialization index.

Slipping in Rankings

According to the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) latest analysis, the Africa Industrial Investment Barometer (AfIIB) and African Industrialisation Index (AII) 2025 report reveals Botswana’s position has fallen from ninth in 2010 to fifteenth in 2024. This downward trend occurred despite some recent positive developments in its industrial landscape.

Key Factors Behind the Decline

The report attributes this decline to several factors, including a weakening manufacturing sector. Furthermore, a more specialized export base has contributed to the country’s reduced industrial diversification, impacting its overall industrialization score.
