Vehicle market remains hooked on Japanese imports

Botswana’s Car Market Sees Dip in Registrations, Japanese Imports Still Dominate

Botswana’s vehicle market experienced a slight slowdown in late 2025. Despite this, imported used cars continue to hold a significant share of new registrations, particularly from Japan. Official statistics show a minor contraction in overall vehicle additions to the roads.

Registrations Decline in Q4 2025

Statistics Botswana reported a 3.7 percent decrease in first-time vehicle registrations during the fourth quarter of 2025. The number fell to 9,942 vehicles, down from 10,324 in the preceding quarter. This indicates a moderate shift in the pace of vehicle acquisitions.

Passenger Cars Lead Market Share

Even with the overall decline, passenger cars maintained their strong presence within the market. They accounted for a substantial 72.8 percent of all new registrations recorded in that quarter. This highlights a consistent consumer preference for private vehicles in Botswana.
