BPF Rift Deepens

BPF Faces Deepening Internal Divide

A significant division has emerged within the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF), with a faction led by Mephato Reatile declining to participate in an elective congress scheduled for July. This group, associated with Galebotswe, instead plans to hold its own parallel meeting in Mahalapye in August.

Competing Congresses Spark Controversy

The BPF’s interim president, Dr. Keorapetse Joy Muzila, announced a full elective congress for late July. However, the opposing faction has dismissed this congress as illegitimate. They assert that due process was not followed in its organization.

Mephato Reatile, a key figure in the dissenting group, stated that the July congress lacks proper authorization. He emphasized their intent to proceed with a separate gathering in Mahalapye, advocating for a congress that adheres to what they deem the party’s constitutional framework.

Leadership Challenges and Accusations

The current dispute highlights ongoing challenges to Dr. Muzila’s leadership. The Galebotswe-aligned faction has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of her interim presidency, citing alleged constitutional irregularities in her ascension to the role.

These internal conflicts threaten to destabilize the BPF, potentially impacting its future political standing. The dual congresses suggest a struggle for control over the party’s direction and leadership structure.
