Condom Access in Prisons: A Policy Challenge for Botswana
Botswana’s National AIDS and Health Promotion Agency (NAHPHA) has called on the Botswana Prison Service (BPS) to take the lead in establishing a policy for condom distribution within correctional facilities. NAHPHA indicates its readiness to offer support once such a framework is initiated by the BPS.
The Need for Policy Development
Currently, the absence of a defined policy prevents inmates from accessing condoms. This situation has prompted NAHPHA to emphasize the prison service’s role in addressing this public health concern.
NAHPHA’s Stance
NAHPHA’s position underscores that the responsibility for drafting and implementing a policy on condom availability for inmates lies with the Botswana Prison Service. The health agency has publicly stated its commitment to assist the BPS in this endeavor once a policy initiative begins.
