Botswana Forgoes Billions in Mining Equity
Botswana’s government is not taking equity stakes in several key mining operations. This decision means the nation could miss out on a share of significant revenues. In 2025, these operations are projected to generate approximately P16 billion.
Unexercised Options
Mining legislation allows the government to acquire ownership interests when granting licenses. Despite this provision, the Ministry of Minerals and Energy confirmed no direct shareholding in various mines.
Mines Without Government Stakes
Specifically, the government holds no equity in Mowana Mine, Karowe Mine, Khoemacau’s Zone 5 Mine, Minergy’s Medie Mine, or Motheo Mine. This position means the country is not directly participating in the profits of these ventures, even with the legal framework in place to do so.
