Botswana Eyes Digital Election Overhaul for 2029 Vote
Botswana’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is advancing a significant technological upgrade ahead of the 2029 General Elections. This initiative aims to modernize various aspects of the electoral process, addressing long-standing needs for improved efficiency and data management.
Modernizing Electoral Systems
Reports indicate the IEC is rolling out technology-driven reforms to enhance voter registration and streamline data management. This move is designed to minimize administrative errors and update the existing infrastructure, which largely dates back to the 1990s.
Central to these reforms is a new Elections Management System (EMS). This comprehensive system is currently in advanced testing phases, with full deployment anticipated for the next general election. The development of the EMS reportedly signals a commitment to leveraging digital solutions for a more effective electoral framework.
IEC Foresees Enhanced Efficiency
IEC Secretary Jefferson Siamisang reportedly informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) about the upcoming changes. He highlighted the new system’s potential to significantly improve the accuracy and speed of electoral operations. The IEC’s push for digital transformation reflects a broader trend of leveraging technology to bolster election integrity and transparency.
