Government withdraws de-recognition letters against Basubiya chief

Government Reverses Course on Basubiya Chieftaincy Dispute

High Court Ruling Preceded Withdrawal

In a significant development, the government has rescinded its previous attempts to alter the status of Basubiya chief Munitenge Lawrence Liswani Sinvula. Initially, the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs had issued letters in September 2025, aiming to reclassify Sinvula from a paramount chief to a sub-chief at the village level. This decision faced strong opposition, ultimately leading to a High Court challenge.

Formal Withdrawal Confirms Original Status

The Attorney-General’s Chambers formally communicated the withdrawal of these controversial letters to Sinvula’s legal representatives, Mbeha Attorneys, on February 16, 2026. The communication stated a complete withdrawal of the previous directives, effective immediately. This action effectively restores Sinvula’s position to its original status as the recognized Kgosi of the Basubiya tribe.

Implications for Traditional Leadership

This government reversal highlights the complexities and sensitivities surrounding traditional leadership structures. The High Court’s intervention and the subsequent withdrawal underscore the legal protections afforded to customary authorities and the importance of due process in such matters. The decision solidifies Sinvula’s leadership within the Basubiya community, concluding a period of uncertainty regarding his official recognition.
