Former President Khama Questions Intelligence Agency Practices
Former President Ian Khama, also serving as Bangwato Paramount Chief, recently raised concerns regarding the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS). Speaking at the Ntlo ya Dikgosi, Khama addressed various issues within the intelligence agency, directing his questions to the Minister for State President, Defense and Security.
Allegations of Misconduct and Accountability
Khama’s inquiries focused on alleged impropriety, abuse of office, and a perceived lack of accountability within the DIS. These broad concerns underpinned a series of specific points he brought forward for government consideration.
Specific Points of Contention
Among the issues highlighted were potential conflicts of interest in DIS promotion processes. He also questioned the handling of what is known as the “Butterfly” matter, a high-profile case that has garnered public attention.
Furthermore, Khama raised concerns about the prolonged administrative leave of a senior DIS officer. He also probed the operational methods of covert intelligence officers, questioning their reporting structures when not assigned to conventional offices.
