Botswana is set to experience significant cost of living increases beginning April 1, 2026. The government has signaled upcoming adjustments to both public transport fares and electricity tariffs. These changes are expected to intensify discussions around household budgets and the broader economic landscape.
Public Transport Fares to Rise
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure confirmed that new public transport fares will take effect on April 1, 2026. This decision follows negotiations with transport operators, who had previously threatened a strike.
According to the Ministry, both parties “amicably agreed to call off the planned strike” and to conduct a “comprehensive review of public transport fares.” This review process will include public consultations, allowing for community input on the proposed changes.
Looming Electricity Tariff Increases
Alongside the public transport adjustments, there are indications of impending increases in electricity tariffs. This dual hike is anticipated to put additional pressure on households and businesses across the country. The precise details of the electricity tariff adjustments are expected to emerge as the effective date approaches.
