Government Opts for Living Wage Package Over Minimum Wage Hike
The government has declined a proposal from public service unions to implement a P4,000 basic minimum wage. Instead, officials are pursuing a comprehensive living wage package.
Minimum Wage Proposal Rejected
This decision marks a departure from some pre-election commitments regarding the lowest-paid public servants. Unions had advocated for the P4,000 minimum wage as a crucial step to improve living standards.
Living Wage Package Eyed
Gaone Macholo, Director of the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM), outlined the government’s alternative approach. The focus is now on developing a broader living wage package designed to address various aspects of employee welfare beyond a simple minimum wage increase.
