Electricity Tariff Hike: A Question of Communication
A recent dispute has emerged regarding potential electricity tariff adjustments. The Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security faced scrutiny after a social media post addressing rumors of an imminent price increase.
Ministry Denies Imminent Hike
On Monday, the Ministry utilized its Facebook platform to counter reports of an upcoming electricity tariff hike. The official statement labeled these reports as “FAKE NEWS.”
Focus on Past Reductions and Affordability
The Ministry’s post highlighted a previous reduction in electricity tariffs for domestic consumers, effective July 1, 2025. It noted that those consuming up to 200 kWh received a 30% tariff decrease. This adjustment, the Ministry explained, aimed to ensure electricity remained affordable for all income groups and that the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) could meet its operational obligations. The statement concluded by asserting the government’s lack of plans to reverse these adjustments.
