Voter Registration Not Linked to Referendum – IEC

Botswana’s Electoral Commission Clarifies Voter Registration Purpose

Routine Exercise, Not Referendum Preparation

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of Botswana has addressed recent speculation regarding its upcoming supplementary voter registration. The Commission states that the exercise is a standard electoral procedure, not an indicator of an impending referendum.

Dispelling Referendum Rumors

Reports had linked the voter registration initiative to a potential referendum on the contentious Constitutional Court Bill. However, the IEC has clarified the purpose of the registration.

Jefferson Siamisang, Secretary of the IEC, explained that these registration periods are a regular part of the electoral process. They are designed to allow eligible citizens to register or update their details on the voters’ roll.

The Commission emphasizes that its focus remains on maintaining an accurate and inclusive voter database. This ensures that all qualified voters have the opportunity to participate in future elections.
