UDC’s 500,000 Jobs by 2029 target takes 500 steps back

Job Creation Efforts Face Early Setback

Botswana’s ambitious target of creating 500,000 jobs by 2029 experienced an early challenge, as new data indicates a reduction in employment figures shortly after a change in government. The stated goal aims to significantly boost the nation’s employment landscape over the next several years.

Nearly 500 Jobs Lost

Between November 2024 and November 2025, a period following the recent governmental transition, 487 jobs were reportedly lost. This information comes from retrenchment notifications submitted to the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs.

Ministerial Confirmation

Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Pius Mokgware, confirmed these figures in Parliament. His statement was in response to an inquiry from Bobirwa MP Taolo Lucas, highlighting the official acknowledgment of the job losses.
