Botswana is preparing to host the Gaborone 26 World Athletics Relays, an event poised to generate significant economic benefits and a lasting sports legacy. The relays are scheduled for May 2-3, 2026, and organizers are emphasizing their potential to transform various sectors.
Economic Diversification Through Sports Tourism
Moses Bantsi, CEO of Gaborone 26 World Athletics Relays, highlighted the event’s role in Botswana’s economic diversification efforts. He noted the country’s historical reliance on mineral resources, particularly diamonds, and the push towards sustainable economic models. Sports tourism, Bantsi stated, offers a promising avenue for growth.
The event is expected to draw global media attention and thousands of visitors, presenting a unique opportunity for Botswana to market itself as a prime travel destination. With its diverse landscapes, wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, the nation aims to showcase its attractions beyond the two-day event.
Local businesses are encouraged to capitalize on the influx of visitors. Opportunities are anticipated in sectors like accommodation, food services, souvenir sales, and transport. The organizers hope this economic activity will extend well beyond the relays.
A Celebratory Milestone and Sporting Development
The timing of the relays in 2026 coincides with Botswana’s 60th anniversary of independence, offering a celebratory dimension to the event. Organizers hope the relays will contribute to a memorable year for the country.
Beyond celebrations, a core objective is to bolster domestic sports development. Renovations are underway at the National Stadium and UB Stadium, which will serve as direct benefits to the sporting infrastructure. However, the vision for a legacy extends further.
The Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) is expected to gain significantly. Organizers are working to secure funding for the BAA to prepare national teams for the event. As hosts, Botswana plans to field at least five teams: men’s and women’s 4x100m, 4x400m, and a mixed relay team.
Elevating National Athletics
While Botswana’s men’s 4x400m relay team is recognized for its strength, other teams, particularly the women’s and mixed relay squads, require further development. The relays offer a critical platform to enhance their preparation and competitiveness.
Bantsi expressed a desire to build a formidable women’s team that can achieve success not only at the World Relays but also at future major competitions, including the Africa Senior Championships, World Athletics Championships, and the LA 2028 Olympics.
Organizers also aim to establish a legacy fund after the event. This fund would support ongoing sports development programs, fostering sustained growth within Botswana’s athletic landscape.
