Botswana’s ambitious public projects face significant hurdles, with many stalled nationwide. This poses a potential threat to the nation’s socio-economic development, as highlighted in a recent report. The investigation reveals systemic issues hindering the effective implementation of public infrastructure.
Report Uncovers Deep-Seated Issues
A comprehensive report, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and titled “Public Investment Programme Implementation Diagnosis and Skills Capacity Assessment,” points to fundamental weaknesses. These include deficiencies in planning, project execution, and skills management, underscoring persistent challenges in the country’s public investment programs (PIP).
Significant Infrastructure Waste Identified
Previous assessments have also raised concerns. An International Monetary Fund (IMF) review of Botswana’s public expenditure in 2017 indicated that a substantial 37% of public spending on infrastructure projects resulted in waste. This figure underscores the urgent need for improved oversight and efficiency in project delivery to ensure public funds are utilized effectively and contribute to national growth.
